The modern trucks require more high tech parts to make them faster without tearing the engine apart and starting over. The aftermarket has taken notice and given us an abundance of performance bolt on products. You can buy performance parts at your local parts store or online. Each product has it's own appeal to each person. Some people look for products that are inexpensive but do the same job as the highly polished parts that look good, perform well and are more expensive."Bolt on" performance has become a huge industry. Why tear down the engine, replace the cam, pistons, etc when you can bolt on products that will give you just about the same performance.

Microchips and Microtuners growing to be the quickest horsepower gain of any aftermarket product. They are simple to install, require no maintance and give you a sudden increase of 15 to???? horsepower in a matter of minutes. It's all in the programming. Depending on your application you can get over 100 hp just by hooking up a Microtuner to your under dash port. Diesel trucks tend to benefit the most from chips and tuners. I've seen increases up to 175 hp in a matter of minutes. But your v-6's and v-8's aren't left out. Typically a standard set tuner or chip will give a gas powered motor 15-35hp. A custom tuned tuner can give you much more than that. It all depends on the programming and the performance parts you have already installed.

Cold air intakes are one of the most popular bolt on performance products. They help the engine breath better thus increasing the hp output. If your looking for pure power gain and are not concerned with appearance a less expensive plastic bodied intake will be great for you. But if your looking for performance and appearance a stainless steel intake is your fix. An aftermarket intake takes about an hour to install (depending on application). Automatically, you notice a nice throaty sound coming from under the hood. Stomp on the gas and you can hear that baby breath deep and give you a quick kick in the hp department.

Underdrive pullies are also very popular. These are a direct bolt on but require some under the truck time. Underdrive pullies reduce parasitic losses and free up horsepower and torque.Some applications require a pulley puller to remove the factory pulley but most people have the rest of the tools to change out pulleys. Some people report that their electrical system does not charge as well but run the RPM's up a little and it will compensate for the difference in sizes.

Catback exhaust is normally the first aftermarket performance part that people will buy. It changes the sound of your truck from factory blah to "oh yeah." This again is some under the truck time but it's time well spent. Depending on the age of your truck the exhaust hardware can be difficult to get off. A break over bar and some good lubricant will take care of that problem. Once the old exhaust is out you can bolt up the new exhaust. You'll use the factory hangers to install it or if you buy a system that changes your exhaust position you may have to take it to a muffler shop to have brackets welded in place. This is another product that you can decide to have just a standard steel system or if you want to pay the extra money for a stainless steel exhaust that not only performs well but looks good.

These are just the most popular performance bolt on products. You can buy products to make your transmission shift harder. You can buy performance spark plugs, wires and coil packs. It's become an endless sea of aftermarket performance parts. With the examples I gave you above your truck can gain 75-125 hp in a weekend and with about $1200 spent. That's a pretty good deal to make your truck faster than the other guys. If you want your truck to perform, sound good and look good the parts are out there. All you have to do is buy them and install them.
